For those who have single glazing a huge amount of heat is lost at this time of year through the windows. There are several things you can do. Making sure you close the curtains as soon as it gets dark helps. Having heavy curtains with a good lining also help and you can even thermally line them for the winter with quilted material.

Another option is to shrink wrap your windows on the inside to make temporary secondary glazing. You can buy kits from DIY stores and they are fairly straightforward to install. The thin plastic is taped to the window frame and then made tight with a hair dryer.

Hey Dawn,

This reply is probably too late to be of any use, but great (cheap) destinations include isle of Arran (stay in Lamlash), Hiring the Yhurt at Marthrown of Mabie (Dumfries), or Stayin on Lochalsh (Eilan Donnan Castle).

Hey everyone,

Hope this wet weather is not dampening your spirits too much.

Just wanted to share 2 great low carbon holiday ideas.

Andy and I recently had an incredible long weekend on Arran. The island is perfect for cycling (which is why we were there) with miles of roads and lots of scenic views to enjoy. Accommodation is cheap as chips and you can easily camp it the weather is amenable.

If you're not into cycling there is a great bus service so you can see and do everything without any need for a car. Getting there is super easy too... you can get a train straight to Ardrossan from Glasgow Central and the ferry from Ardrossan to Arran is quick and charges nothing for you bringing a bike.

Sights to see include Holy Island, Lamlash, King's Cave and more golf courses that you could shake a stick at. Needless to say there are plenty of nice beaches, hill walks and stunning views too.

We also did a city break to Brighton- easy city to get around on foot or by bike and easy to get to by train.

Enjoy!

Hello all

We are planning a lovely holiday to cornwall, as its in Britain, we will be driving, which means we can visit lots of family and friends on the journeys to and from.

We are also planning to sample the best of the local food and drink that cornwall has to offer.

We are looking forward to our adventures.

This is the right blog for anyone who wants to find out about this topic. You realize so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I actually would want…HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a topic thats been written about for years. Great stuff, just great!

So, that's us back from our few days away and although it was lovely I think I was actually more excited about the way my plants have thrived while we've been gone! All the tomatoes we've got outside are doing better than those in the greenhouse and my herbs and artichokes seem to be loving the hot/wet weather combo recently. If only the grass didn't enjoy it so much - I can't keep up with cutting it!
