Gallus Glenquoich
Friday 30th May to Friday 1st June
Glenquoich is located in the western highlands
about 20 miles west of Invergarry. The scenery in this part
of Scotland is stunning and mountainous. Groups of volunteers
have been helping to maintain and improve walking paths at this
site for a number of years as part of an excellent SNH funded
project. This project asks people who sometimes hill-walk
in Scotland to give up a weekend to help maintain the paths at
Glenquoich, thus contributing to the national path network which
they use. In exchange, they receive free camping/accommodation
and food.
Date |
Friday 30th May to Friday 1st June |
Tasks |
We will be upgrading footpaths used by hill-walkers to prevent erosion. The work will involve the construction of various types of drainage on one section of footpath and the upgrading of some surfaces. The site will be exposed and there will be a walk of up to ½ hour to access the work site. We will be making up part of a larger group of about 30 volunteers. |
Site |
Glenquoich is in the Western highlands, north west of Fort William. |
Accommodation |
Accommodation will be in a beautifully located but basic cottage. There are some beds but not enough for the whole group, so some people will sleep on the floor. Participants should bring sleeping bags and roll mats. There is a shower in the cottage. |
Food |
A highland welcome and a (superb) buffet dinner is laid on for the group by the people who live at Glenquoich, while lunch and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday are provided. We will stop for fish and chips en-route on Friday evening (not included in price). |
Transport |
We will collect people from outside Jimmy Chungs Chinese Restaurant on Waverley Bridge in Edinburgh at 6.00 pm on the Friday and will return to the spot for about 6 pm on the Sunday. Transport to and from the site is included in the cost of the weekend. |
The cultural bit |
A suitably unusual sporting activity will be dreamed up for the Saturday evening, while the water at Glenquoich is known to be bath temperature all year round, so swimming is encouraged (at swimmers own risk). |
Cost |
£25/£20 waged/unwaged. |
