New Elgin Primary School Wildlife Garden Project

New Elgin Primary SchoolThe site

New Elgin Primary School  is a school close to the centre of Elgin with lots of ideas about how they can improve their grounds to create a wildlife garden.  The school currently doesn’t have a proper outdoor teaching area and so the development of this project will provide the school with a hands-on teaching resource for environmental learning – an important part of the new curriculum for excellence.  The garden area will also help the school to reach full eco-school status.

The project

The school grounds offer access to the public out of school hours and so the garden has to be designed with vandalism in mind.  As such, the central part of the new garden will be a number of large stones which will be quarried locally and have environmental figures carved into them.  These will be installed using machinery but will need to have holes dug for their foundations.  Next to these stones, a series of trees will be planted, to create a sense that the garden has a focus.  Alongside one perimeter of the garden, a native species hedge will be planted, while a series of raised beds may also be built, depending on the size of the group who are involved in the project.
