Royal Edinburgh Hospital sensory garden projectThe site

The Royal Edinburgh Hospital provides acute psychiatric and mental health services, including treatment for learning disabilities and dementia. Its specialist services include centres for the treatment of eating disorders, alcohol problems and young people’s mental health. The Greenbank Unit is a day and residential unit working with clients with learning disability and challenging behaviour.

The project

The Greenbank Unit has a large garden that is split into three distinct areas. Presently it is mostly lawn with little garden development having been carried out. This project will add a variety of features to make the garden more diverse in terms of its interest for the client group, while also making it more friendly for wildlife. The work that will be carried out to achieve this will be as follows:

Building of a series of raised beds using replica railway sleepers. These beds will be used for planting vegetables and flowering plants

Creation of a footpath through the small wooded area that is not laid to lawn, to allow the client group to access this part of the garden

Building of a small retaining wall using replica railway sleepers to make a bench and to provide a location for woodland tolerant plants

Creation of a sensory garden area that can be used for therapeutic work with the client group.
