Caledonian Woodlands Project – woodlands planted by 1000 hands
We are encouraging people to support our projects which aim to improve Scotland’s environment – for nature, for people and for the future.
New Caledonian Woodlands is playing a role in the movement to replant and restore native species woodland throughout Scotland. More than 80% of Scotland used to be covered in native species woodland, yet today that figure is less than 10%, one of the lowest rates in Europe. More positively, Scotland is one of the few nations in the world where the percentage cover of native species woodlands is actually growing. We think that woodland planted by local people will be more highly valued in the future and so would love for you to become involved in our project.
Planting trees as part of well managed and well designed woodland projects enhances local biodiversity and so supports a broad range of species, ranging from plants and mosses to insects, birds and animals. Woodlands also provide valuable and sustainable resources, are beautiful places for people to spend time and to enjoy, while they can also play a small but significant role in tackling climate change.
There are two key ways that you can support our project:
1. Gifts that grow - purchase trees as a gift for a friend or family member, or even just as a gift to be shared between yourself and nature. We will plant these on your behalf at one of our woodland sites and manage these woodlands for the long term.
2. Tree planting days - spend a day on one of our tree planting projects where you will plant lots of trees and learn more about woodlands and about the role they play in the environment – both at a local and a global level.
The woodlands
We will be planting trees to create new woodlands and to enhance existing woodlands in a number of locations throughout Scotland. This winter we will be planting at sites in Midlothian, the Scottish Borders and in Fife. We believe that keeping environmental projects local encourages feelings of ownership and so helps to ensure the long-term protection and safety of these valuable resources.
All of the trees which we plant are native to Scotland, while seeds are locally sourced, to ensure that the genetic stock of the native woodlands is preserved. All of our trees are planted on sites that have been carefully chosen to ensure that they will be able to grow to full maturity, so that they can benefit humanity and nature far into the future.
We hope to purchase land in 2009 to allow us to create a new community woodland which will be managed in trust for the future by New Caledonian Woodlands.
Why not look at our The Trees section to find out more about some of the species which you will be helping to plant by purchasing trees from us.
